Problem with coded puzzles - code solution eps

Postby vida vida » Tue Nov 13, 2007 12:44 pm

Hello again,

Having just upgraded to CC8 (as mentioned in a previous post, thanks for your reply to that one), I've come across a problem - when saving a Coded puzzle as an eps, the 'code solution' option previously saved a grid which included both numbers 1-26 AND solution letters. Now, it seems to save a grid with only letters. Is there a way to change this? I need this function fairly urgently, so if you don't have a suggestion or plan an update any time soon, could you let me know how to retrograde back to CC7?

Thanks for your help.

This seems to work OK for me (as before). Do you get the same using both Advanced and basic EPS export option?

No - the problem is only when saving in the Basic eps mode. The "general (font embedding)" mode does save both numbers and letters, but this seems to cause font issues when I open the eps on a Mac, so I'd rather use the Basic mode if possible. Does it save the numbers for you in Basic? Is there some preference I need to change?

I see, yes there does seem to be a problem with basic EPS. I've fixed it for the next update.

Perhaps you can use the PDF Image export option instead for the moment?

Thanks for letting me know. Do you know when you'll put out the next update? I have a deadline in a fortnight, and I'm not sure the PDF will do, though I will try it. Would it be best for me to look into going back to CC7?

(I hate to seem demanding - in general I love the program, thanks for all your work!)

Hi Antony,
I'm not sure if I'm being directed to the right place - that link just takes me to the usual user support page, suggesting a bundle version upgrade. Is this what you mean? Or should I be looking for a free update?
Thanks...

Select "Download updates from the Web" in Version 8's Help menu, does that give you an update link?

Hi again,

Thanks, I have managed to download that update. I'm sorry to cause you so much trouble, but unfortunately, I think there's a problem with the update. It doesn't seem to completely solve the problem of the missing numbers from the eps coded solution. I couldn't work out why at first, it seemed to save it ok sometimes but not others. I've been running tests, and I think that it will only save the correct coded solution eps if that is the first and only kind of eps you choose to save after opening Crossword Compiler. If you save only coded solutions, it works fine. However, if you save a puzzle or solution, then no coded solution will save correctly afterwards, unless you quit the program and reopen it. I know that sounds strange, and it may be something I'm doing wrong. Would you mind checking to see if it does the same for you?

I really appreciate all your help with this. I mentioned before that I had the pressure of a deadline, but I've found a way to use the "general (font embedding)" eps option for the coded solutions temporarily, so I can use them for now. It'd be useful if you could solve the basic eps problem at some point, but I don't want to demand all your time, so whenever suits you!

I have to say that I couldn't replicate that. Are you exporting individual files (as basic EPS), from the Export window?

Yes, I am just exporting individual files as basic eps. I think, having looked at the other things the update should do, that perhaps the update isn't loading at all. I'm still finding the same problems exporting eps groups etc. When I try to install the update, I get an error message 'CC8 and Pro Grid Filler must be installed before installing the pro update'. I don't have the Pro Grid Filler, but does this mean I can't use the update? I do have CC8 obviously, and I'm accessing the update through the CC help menu. Can you suggest any reason why the update doesn't install, and any way around this? If it makes any difference, I'm using the program on a PC emulator on my Mac.
