| I have a simple question that I need an answer to. I am looking at the requirements for submission for a crossword puzzle, and one of them is that they do not want a puzzle with no unchecked letters. I need to make sure I understand what an unchecked letter is. Is it a letter that doesn't fit in any word, but is kind of out there by itself (attached to only one word)? Thanks for the help. |

Yep - an unchecked letter is one that doesn't intersect with another word in the puzzle. Typical US crosswords have 100% cross-checking, which means every letter in the grid is part of the answer to both an Across and Down clue. If you successfully complete every clue Across, all of the Down answers will be completed (or vice versa).
