Browsing through crossword sites a year or two ago I came across a useful guide to composing cryptic clues, listing the various types of clues and setting out the basic requirements for each. I clipboarded this and then lost it in a hard drive crash some months later ... and now the Net is resisting all my efforts to find that site again. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

There is also an intro in the Crossword Compiler help file - search for "Introduction to Cryptics" (get Help by pressing F1 or using the option on the Help menu).
